Rent a catamaran in Ibiza

Renting a catamaran for a vacation is becoming increasingly popular and there are great reasons for it. Aside from the fact that they are very comfortable to sleep in, they have many other benefits.

Pros of renting a catamaran in Ibiza

Equipped with a shallow draft instead of a keel, a catamaran is the perfect water vehicle to explore in shallow water and coves - something that Ibiza has plenty to offer. Renting a catamaran in Ibiza means that you will get to explore hidden beaches, coves and other places filled with natural beauty that you would miss out on otherwise.

Another advantage is the speed of catamarans. They are much faster than regular sailing boats. This means that you get to explore more of Ibiza in just one day than with a classic sailing boat.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Ibiza

As catamarans are bigger than other boats, they usually take up more space than other boats to dock. This also increases the costs of docking. Especially on a popular island like Ibiza this could become a little bit of a problem in the busy summer months. Another disadvantage of renting a catamaran is the fact that there can be a lot of loud pounding noises as the boat is strapped between two hulls - especially when the winds and waves pick up. This can become a bit annoying - but sailing slower and avoiding heavy winds can reduce the noise. However, the relatively calm sea in Ibiza makes this less of an issue than in other destinations.

Rent a sailboat in Ibiza

Pros of renting a sailboat in Ibiza

One of the major advantages of renting a sailboat is the cost. As it moves with the speed of the wind and doesn’t use an engine, it is much cheaper to move the boat. As Ibiza is not the cheapest destination in Spain, this is something you might want to keep in mind when booking your next vacation.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Ibiza

As sailboats don’t have engines and are dependent on strong winds, it makes them particularly practical for long distances and routes with heavy winds. As the winds are normally not that strong in Ibiza, it could become a problem to get from point A to B on those kinds of days. Especially when you are just on vacation for a week you might want to rethink saving money and losing out on experiences because of it. You might get stuck without knowing when the wind is going to push you forward again.

Another disadvantage is that you have to stay alert at all times as you are highly dependent on the weather when sailing on a sailboat. Your mantra truly needs to be: Anything can happen at any time and I need to be prepared for it!

Rent a motorboat in Ibiza

Pros of renting a motorboat in Ibiza

Renting a motorboat in Ibiza means that you can go anywhere extremely fast. It only takes 30 minutes from Ibiza to Formentera on a motorboat! Besides the speed, motorboats are definitely a luxury option when it comes to renting a boat for a vacation. They offer you the comfort you would like to enjoy while on vacation. Unlike sailboats, they don’t require a lot of expertise to maneuver - even as a beginner. Plus: Their shallow frame allows you to anchor closer to the shore than with a sailboat. A definite plus if you want to swim to a stunning hidden beach that you would not reach otherwise.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Ibiza

One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Ibiza is the cost of fuel. The speed comes with the cost of using a lot of fuel which is extremely costly. Day trips around the island and hopping from hidden cove to hidden cove might sound fun, but also come at a high price.

Rent a Speedboat in Ibiza

Pros of renting a speedboat in Ibiza

Rent a speedboat in Ibiza when you are looking for fun. There is nothing better than racing the waters of the Mediterranean! The speed is definitely a pro when renting this type of vessel. You will circle Ibiza in no time. A fun bonus point: Try wakeboarding when renting a speedboat.

Cons of renting a speedboat in Ibiza

Speeding along the coast of Ibiza can also be a con as you will focus more on the destination rather than the route. You might miss out on the beauty that surrounds you when racing to the next place.

What kind of boat licence do you need when renting a boat in Ibiza?

You can always rent a boat with a skipper so that you neither have to worry about discovering the most beautiful routes nor a boat licence. If you feel adventurous enough to sail through the Mediterranean waters in Ibiza, you need to consider the following:

  • You can rent a boat without a boat licence in Ibiza when the boat is up to five meters long and holds a maximum motor power of 15hp or a sailboat that’s up to six meters long; you are only allowed to sail during daylight hours without a licence

If you do have a boat licence, the following applies according to Spanish law:

  • EU citizens can operate a boat in Spanish waters with a valid boat licence, eg a French citizen who received their boat licence in France can operate a boat in Spain
  • EU citizens who received their boat licence in a country other than their country of origin, must prove that they are either a resident in that country or have been at the time of receiving the licence, eg a French citizen who has a Portuguese boat licence must prove that they are either a resident in Portugal or have been at the time of receiving their boat licence
  • If you are a EU citizen and want to head into Spanish waters with a boat that you rented outside of Spain, you can do so considering the restrictions explained above
  • Non-EU citizens need a specific certificate to operate a boat in Spanish waters - they can apply for it through a consulate
