Menorca, part of the Balearic islands, might be less known than Mallorca and Ibiza, but has something very special to offer. The human history of Menorca starts in prehistoric times. Remnants like taula, which is often described as the Stonehenge of Menorca indicate that humans have been living on the island for a very long time. You can still visit these prehistoric sites today.
During Roman times, the Balearic islands of Menorca and Mallorca were used as bases for pirates in the Mediterranean. They used them as their base to attack Roman ships - until the Romans decided to invade Menorca. Throughout the centuries the island often became a playball in the games of power. The Muslims arrived on the island in 903. Ciutadella was made the capital of the island during their rule - it was the capital of Menorca until 1722. You can still see the Moorish influences in the architecture of the city. Stroll around the city to travel back in time.
Many myths surround the island of Menorca. One of those myths is surrounding a pirate named Xoroi. You might remember that we mentioned the pirate attacks that occurred during Roman times, but they continued even in the 16th century - this time they were hitting Menorca. One of those infamous pirates was Xoroi who was known for stealing food. He fell in love with a girl from the island. Nobody knew about their romance and one day the girl just disappeared. When it snowed, the inhabitants discovered footsteps in the snow which they followed. They were led to Cales Coves where they discovered the two of them and the three children that they now shared. Xoroi panicked and jumped into the sea. His eldest son followed him. No one ever saw them again.
Menorca is a great place for a sailing vacation. Charter a yacht to discover all the fantastic hidden bays and beaches the island has to offer.
Like many islands in the Mediterranean sea, Menorca offers sunshine almost all year round. The best time to go sailing here is between April and October, but feel free to sail here all year round. June, July and August are the most popular months, meaning that the island becomes a little more crowded during this period. Especially beginners will appreciate the area to practice their sailing skills.
The Northern part of the island is famous for its natural beauty and coastlines. Many unusual beaches can be found here. The South is a bit less adventurous, but just as beautiful. Many parts of the island here are filled with pine trees, making you think of Christmas in the summer.
As Menorca is less popular and crowded than the other Balearic islands, you can find incredibly good boat deals - especially off-season. Of course the price also varies depending on the size of your boat, the amount of people travelling with you, how many bedrooms and bathrooms the boat has, what type of boat, etc.
On average it costs 68 EUR per person per day to rent a sailboat in Spain. Renting a RIb costs 54 EUR per person per day on average. Renting a catamaran or a motorboat in Spain comes at a higher price. A catamaran will cost you an average of 111 EUR per person per day while a motorboat will cost you 179 EUR per person per day on average.
Depending on the type of sailing vacation you would like to experience in Menorca, you should choose your boat carefully. If you just want to relax all day long and discover a hidden beach or cave every now and then, you would choose a different kind of boat than the one you would go for if you want to sail across the sea, feel the wind in your hair and properly work to get the boat running.
Pros of renting a catamaran in Menorca
Their shallow drafts make catamarans the perfect boat for exploring more remote beaches like Cala Turqueta which is going to mesmerize you with its turquoise waters and white sandy beach. You can sail and anchor much closer to the shore than you could with another type of boat. See all the natural wonders Menorca has to offer from up close.
Another advantage of renting a catamaran in Menorca is the fact that catamarans stand on two hulls, giving them extra stability. You will feel much less shaky than on other types of boats. This also means that catamarans are often much more spacious than sailboats for example. You won’t feel too claustrophobic when entering the cabins on board.
Another amazing thing about renting a catamaran in Menorca is the fact that they are equipped with a sail and an engine, which means that you can use the sail when the wind is blowing and the engine when the wind suddenly stops blowing, but you don’t want to wait in the middle of the sea before moving forward. This will save you a lot of frustrations.
One of the most popular catamarans to rent in Menorca is Catamaran Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41 which is available in the port of Mahón. Up to 12 guests can sleep on this boat, but keep in mind that there are only two bathrooms to share. A stove brings extra comfort as you can prepare your own food on board whenever you want. A lovely corner on deck allows everyone to enjoy their meals together.
Cons of renting a catamaran in Menorca
One of the downsides of renting a catamaran in Menorca is its size. Of course it's great to have more space, but this also comes with navigating a boat with extra space and trying to find a spot for mooring at a marina. Especially during the busy summer months it might cause some issues. But don’t worry, it’s much nicer to find a spot to anchor in a secluded bay around the island anyway.

Renting a sailboat in Menorca is not necessarily made for those who like to have an easy and relaxed vacation, but these boats are made for anyone seeking a fun adventure. One of the advantages of renting a sailboat is the fact that they are running on wind rather than fuel. This is saving a lot of money - and it is more environmentally friendly.
Another positive aspect of renting a sailboat is the fact that sailboats allow you to enjoy the actual sailing experience. The winds in this part of the Mediterranean are great for sailing - especially for novice sailors who still need to try themselves out.
One of the most popular sailboats to rent in Menorca is Sailboat Dufour 44 Performance . Cons of renting a sailboat in Menorca
One of the downsides of renting a sailboat in Menorca is the fact that sailboats are equipped with keels. This means that you can’t sail in shallow waters or too close to the shore. It can be very dangerous. You might miss out on some really beautiful spots that you might get to explore by renting another type of water vessel.
Pros of renting a motorboat in Menorca
Renting a motorboat in Menorca is the perfect choice for anyone seeking to cross the Mediterranean super fast. Motorboats are generally known for their speed and getting from A to B in a very short amount of time.
Another advantage of renting a motorboat is the fact they are blessed with shallow drafts - just like catamarans. This makes them the perfect boats for discovering the most beautiful hidden beaches and caves all around the island. You can anchor closer to the shore and find a fantastic spot for your boat to spend the night. There is nothing better than waking up to a beautiful sunrise in the Mediterranean.
Cons of renting a motorboat in Menorca
One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Menorca is the fact that they run on fuel - and fuel can become incredibly expensive. Prices are still increasing and there is no end in sight in the near future.
Chartering a luxury yacht in Menorca means that you get an incredible holiday on a boat that almost resembles an all-inclusive holiday in a resort - the views are more stunning though. One of our favourite luxury yachts to rent in this part of the Mediterranean is Motorboat Princess V65 . This wonderful boat is not only suitable for up to 12 people, but includes the crew. Go on the adventure of a lifetime on a luxury yacht. Of course there is a refrigerator and a stove on board to make your own meals if you want, but there is also an ice maker, a dishwasher and a coffee machine. Spend less time doing the dishes and more time out on the sundeck to soak up the Mediterranean sun.
The good news is that you can operate certain boats in Spanish waters without a boat licence. Any boats that are shorter than 5 metres and any sailboats that are shorter than 6 metres and can drive less than 15hp can be operated. Anything bigger and faster than that requires you to have a valid boat licence.
The Licencia de Navegación allows you to operate boats that are no more than 6 metres in length. However, this type of qualification only allows you to sail up to two miles away from the coast. For everything else you need to have a valid boat licence.
Don’t worry if you are not in possession of a valid boat licence. You can always hire a skipper in addition to your bareboat charter in Menorca. This also means that you can relax while the skipper takes care of operating the boat, navigating it safely and taking you to the best hidden beaches. A truly relaxing holiday awaits you!

This is the perfect route for anyone seeking to stop at some of the most beautiful beaches and to anchor for a quiet afternoon.
